Old Enough to Know, Yet Open For Advice

Recent my mother & I had a discussion about shopping. Especially when it came to buying second-hand products from strangers. It was because I received two phone calls about a Kobo E-reader device. Here’s how the discussing went:

“You don’t know who these people are, and you don’t want to get yourself in a situation that’s over your head. Remember what happened to Timothy Bosma?

I calmly replied to her using these words:

“I remember what happened to Tim Bosma. He was murdered while trying to sell his truck. It’s no secret that I’m terrible with money, which has been well documented. However, please give me some credit for using good judgement. I’d never do anything to endanger our lives and safety. Especially since we’re planning to move soon. We’ve got so much to look forward to, plus you’ve got too many things to worry about. Wondering wondering if I’ll be found dead or alive isn’t among them.”

Yes, the last few words were graphic. However, I needed to make my point clear. I’ve done plenty of transactions with people from Kijiji & Craigslist. All of them went smoothly because I followed these safety tips:

Meet in a well-lit area. If possible, travel with a friend. Here’s several examples

  • Fast Food Restaurant,
  • Coffee Shop,
  • Subway Station,
  • Bus Terminal,
  • Shopping Mall,
  • Public Library,
  • Community Centre,
  • Train Station

If you’re meeting at someone’s apartment or condo, meet in the lobby. Never go with them to their suite.

If you follow these rules, there’s no reason buying second-hand goods can’t be done safely.
